How Is Smoking Dangerous to Your Heart?

According to a study, there are nearly 435,000 deaths per year in the United States due to smoking cigarettes, cigars, or other tobacco-based products (Benowitz 2010). One in every four heart-related death in the United States is connected with smoking. The extent of the damage smoking causes to your heart is obvious from the above-given data.
Tobacco contains highly addictive nicotine, along with 4000 other chemicals that destroy the heart completely. Smoking is not only dangerous to your heart, but also it causes many diseases like lung cancer, chronic bronchitis, leukemia, eye cataracts, infertility, impotence, miscarriage, and weak immune system.

The chemicals and tar accumulated in the arteries due to smoking increase a person’s risk of atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is the accumulation of a fatty substance called plaque in the arteries. Over time this plaque hardens and narrows your arteries, impacting the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the organs and other parts of the body (Donovan 2018).
Smoking also increases the risk of peripheral artery disease (PAD), which is the accumulation of plaque in the arteries of arms and legs. Due to the accumulation of plaque, the arteries become narrow, and it severely impacts the blood flow. The buildup of plaque in the coronary arteries can cause coronary heart disease (CHD). Over time, CHD can cause chest pain, heart attack, heart failure, or even death.
Smoking is very dangerous to your heart and overall body. Smoking causes various diseases to different organs of the body right from the eyes to the main organ of the body’s heart. Thus, smoking is not only addictive but is also fatal, and every step must be taken to quit smoking as soon as possible.
